Daniel Merchant USN Ret/LCSW

Daniel Merchant is a licensed clinical social worker specializing in individual trauma, military-related psychological problems, depression, and anxiety. Seeing a need in his community for flexible and personal counseling, he founded Broadsword Counseling while continuing as a Suicide Prevention Coordinator for VA Pittsburgh. In the past decade, he has worked with both inpatient and outpatient counseling clients. He’s handled case management, led group therapy, and won grants through his innovative research.

A Pittsburgh native, Daniel returned to Western PA when he retired after 20 years of cross-country home bases and worldwide deployments serving in the US Navy. He graduated from Seton Hill University and then completed his Master's of Social Work at California University of Pennsylvania (Penn West). After working at UPMC, he chose to serve his brothers and sisters in arms through several different counseling positions with the Veterans’ Administration, where he continues to work in their nationwide suicide prevention program.
